Tech-leiders vragen de VN om ontwikkeling autonome wapens aan banden te leggen

De brief is ondertekend door 116 experts uit het veld van AI en robotica en werd officieel gepubliceerd tijdens de International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence (IJCAI 2017). In de brief wordt de VN gevraagd om zo spoedig mogelijk te handelen naar de mogelijke gevaren van autonome wapens, wat in de brief de derde revolutie in oorlogsvoering genoemd wordt, na buskruit en nucleaire wapens.

‘Wanneer deze wapens eenmaal ontwikkeld zijn, staan ze oorlogsvoering op een ondenkbare schaal toe. Dit kunnen wapens zijn die terroristen gebruiken tegen onschuldige burgers en wapens die gehackt worden om op onwenselijke wijze gebruikt te worden. Zodra deze doos van Pandora open is, zal deze moeilijk te sluiten zijn’, zo wordt er geschreven in de brief.

GGE

De VN is al sinds 2013 bezig om de mogelijkheden, maar ook de gevaren, van autonome wapens te onderzoeken. Hiervoor zijn vier groepen van experts samengesteld, de zogenaamde Groups of Governmental Experts (GGE), die deze maand voor het eerst samen hadden moeten komen, maar wat er niet van kwam doordat enkele lidstaten hun financiële contributie aan de VN hebben verzaakt.

De brief stelt voor om experts vanuit de partijen die de brief hebben ondertekent naar voren te schuiven in een adviserende rol omtrent autonome wapens. Elon Musk heeft in het verleden al meermaals aangegeven dat we de gevaren omtrent AI niet moeten onderschatten. Hij is niet de enige, want ook Bill Gates en Stephen Hawking hebben zich uitgesproken over de mogelijke gevaren die bij AI-technologie komen kijken. Met deze brief heeft Elon Musk in ieder geval een hoop medestanders gevonden en niet de minsten bovendien. De gehele lijst van ondertekenaars vind je hieronder:
