Organizations traditionally use intelligent video cameras for security, but video technology is increasingly being used as a strategic data source. In 2025, 38% of surveyed organizations used video for business intelligence, compared to 20% a year earlier. Additionally, 42% actively use video data to enhance operational efficiency. Cameras are evolving into business sensors that improve performance, reduce costs, and support automation.
Moreover, the report describes how cameras are shifting from passive observation tools to active switches in organizational decision-making. For example, BMW Group uses cameras for AI-driven quality inspection (AIQX). The application performs automatic and accurate checks, enhances product quality, and makes production processes more efficient.
The broader use of video technology also influences organizations' investment choices. Almost two-thirds (64%) of respondents cite infrastructure modernization as the main driver for investment, alongside cybersecurity (44%). Cloud plays an increasingly significant role in this. More than a quarter (27%) of respondents use cloud solutions within physical security, a share that experts predict will rise to 44% within two years. Organizations are therefore increasingly looking for scalable solutions that go beyond traditional monitoring.

Strategic business assets
The report also introduces a five-step model for the lifecycle of intelligent video as strategic business assets. This model guides organizations from passive and reactive systems to proactive, predictive, and ultimately autonomous environments. This way, companies can assess their current position and take targeted steps towards a more data-driven approach.
'We see a clear turning point. Organizations no longer view video technology solely as a security tool but as a strategic source of data that optimizes processes and supports decision-making,' says Verena Rathjen, Vice President EMEA at Axis Communications. 'With Axis Perspectives, we map that evolution. The report helps organizations assess where they stand today and what steps are needed to deploy video in a scalable and secure manner.'
