Gartner predicts that by 2025, 40% of infrastructure and IT operations managers will implement hybrid cloud storage architectures, compared to 15% in 2021. Customers are now implementing hybrid cloud strategies but still need a consistent environment to run their modern applications. This means they require the same level of storage and data management features, regardless of whether they are in the cloud or on-premise.

With the latest release of Portworx Enterprise 2.8, customers get the same cloud-like experience for Kubernetes applications, wherever they are, with broad support for the Kubernetes ecosystem. New capabilities include:

Portworx provides the simplest way to run Kubernetes applications with enterprise-level scale and resilience: release 2.8 of Portworx Enterprise goes significantly beyond the capabilities of other storage solutions that are limited to the 'connector' approach facilitated by the Kubernetes Container Storage Interface (CSI). This limitation results in features that do not go beyond the lowest common denominator and limited scale. With a Kubernetes-native software approach built to support enterprise-level scale and resilience, Portworx combines cloud-native storage management and data protection services with Pure Storage FlashArray and FlashBlade.

When users now provision container-native volumes via Portworx, storage volumes or file systems are automatically created on FlashArray and FlashBlade. This enables true storage-as-code. As a result, customers can manage their modern applications in a Kubernetes-native way while benefiting from the enterprise capabilities of their Pure arrays. Deduplication and compression deliver data reductions of up to 10:1, depending on the workload. More than 40,000 arrays demonstrate a reliability of 99.9999%

Predictive capabilities of Pure1, now for Kubernetes apps running on Portworx: with the latest Portworx release, metrics about Kubernetes cluster and volume usage collected by Portworx are sent to Pure1. This provides a unified visibility and support experience for the Kubernetes applications, with Portworx in the Pure1 portal. This allows the customer to see their deployments end-to-end and troubleshoot issues with Kubernetes applications. As Pure1 collects data needed to understand deployment patterns, customers can also benefit from the predictive support features of Pure1. This is powered by the Meta AI engine to detect anomalies and provide solution recommendations before issues lead to downtime.

Protect Kubernetes applications and achieve rapid recovery with Portworx and FlashBlade: PX-Backup has been validated to work with FlashBlade - Pure's unified fast file and object platform - to provide high-performance backup and recovery of Kubernetes-based workloads. By combining PX-Backup with FlashBlade, customers can protect all their Kubernetes applications, including data and configuration, and benefit from FlashBlade's fast restore of up to 270 TB/hour. Pure has published a Reference Architecture for this solution.

A better container-native storage experience with VMware Tanzu and for any CSI-compatible storage system: the latest release expands Portworx support for leading Kubernetes platforms with the addition of VMware Tanzu support (TKG) via the native Tanzu CSI driver. Furthermore, Portworx Enterprise 2.8 supports the latest CSI specification, allowing Portworx to provide a consistent, Kubernetes-native experience for applications running on any enterprise storage that supports CSI.

A unified experience for all Kubernetes apps running on Pure: with this release, Pure FlashArray and FlashBlade customers can use Portworx Enterprise 2.8 to achieve the highest levels of performance, scale, automation, data protection, and data security for production applications running on Kubernetes. Customers looking to start with Kubernetes without all these advanced requirements can benefit from a new offering starting this summer. The first generation of Pure's Kubernetes offering, Pure Service Orchestrator (PSO), will be part of Portworx Essentials, Portworx's freemium offering.

Portworx Enterprise 2.8 is available in June 2021. More information: https://portworx.com/blog/announcing-portworx-enterprise-3-5/.
