We are familiar with chess computers; they have been playing the greatest players since the last century. With Go, it was different. The game was too difficult, had too many possibilities, and relied too much on (almost) 50/50 chances. There are also nearly 300 more squares than on a chessboard, which is part of why there are at least 100 moves left for every move. In 8 moves, that amounts to 512 trillion (18 zeros) possibilities - simply too many to keep calculating. For chess, that’s about 85 billion, or 0.000000001% of the possible moves in Go. Good luck with that.

But with AlphaGo, the impossible became possible, and how. Engineers and researchers see moves emerging that they cannot explain, but that do work. This raises questions that are also relevant outside of AI: when do you trust a system that performs better than you, but whose internal logic you cannot fully understand?

This question touches on current themes within IT and business management. More and more organizations rely on algorithms for decisions, optimization, and prediction. AlphaGo shows that success is not only about technical performance, but also about governance, interpretation, and trust.

The Human Factor Remains Determinative

Although the documentary is about technology, the human aspect remains central. The emotions of the Go players, the tension within the development team, and the cultural impact of the match make it clear that technological breakthroughs always occur in a human context. Innovation evokes admiration, but also uncertainty and resistance.

This makes AlphaGo relevant for anyone working with complex technology in organizations. It reminds us that adoption and acceptance are just as important as performance on paper.

AlphaGo: What Can AI Not Do?

AlphaGo is not a hype story about AI "taking over everything." It is a nuanced documentary about the collaboration between humans and machines, about learning to let go of classical control, and about what happens when technology reaches a level where intuition and data converge.

The documentary shows what we often think: Can AI really not do that? It will never be able to! But there is always a possibility. Or will AI actually become intelligent? Who's to say. In any case, watch the documentary below.
